My Todd (hermit crab ) has left it's shell.?

I found Todd a few inches away from his shell this morning.The other two shells near seem a bit to big for it.... Is it molting or dead? There is no smell,it's tail looks to be skeletal, there is no movement in it eyes or antenna's - I don't want to touch him - should I cover him with a cut off pop bottle and just wait?
