How to become popular in high school?

High school starts in a month! And I am goin in the 11th grade! I have never been to high school as I lived in India.. Now I was very popular in my old school but I am sure things are different in schools in the us.. So I wanted to know how I can make friends with people! I like to have a lot of friends! Oh and which shops should I shop in??
